Welcome to Beyond Tech Frontiers, where we dive deep into the mechanics of disruptive innovation, market trends, the future of work, and ethical tech. I am your host, Sabine VanderLinden, and today we have an exciting episode lined up for you. We will talk about how IBM is leveraging generative AI to enhance the fan experience at Wimbledon 2024. This is episode number eleven, and I am thrilled to share some fascinating insights with you.

It was thrilling to attend Wimbledon 2024 this year; thanks to IBM’s new generative AI features, my guests and I enjoyed real-time fan experiences on court one. We experienced the IBM Slamtracker and Catch Me Up features, which displayed personalized player stories and analyses based on our respective preferences. This enhancement leverages IBM’s AI and data platform, WatsonX, creating an engaging and tailored experience.

IBM also commissioned a global Morning Consult survey, providing valuable insights into fan engagement and expectations. This survey underscores the importance of using advanced technologies to enhance the viewing experience, making Wimbledon a leader in digital transformation. Nearly one billion worldwide fans are like me, enjoying an immersive experience with match data and AI-generated commentary. This ensures we stay updated throughout The Championships, finishing on 14 July 2024. I hope you have used and enjoyed these innovative features, which help deepen our connection to the sport.

Wimbledon and IBM’s collaboration highlights a blend of tradition and technology, ensuring another memorable tournament for all of us this year. IBM’s new AI features offer personalized player stories at Wimbledon 2024. Insights from a global survey emphasize the need for engaging digital experiences. Wimbledon 2024 provides an enhanced, AI-driven fan experience.

Wimbledon 2024 served up IBM’s generative AI capabilities, enhancing our digital experience with highly targeted and personalized tennis and player-related content on every digital device. I enjoyed features like AI-powered match analysis, commentary, and a redesigned app that kept me updated and engaged throughout the tournament, whether at home, in the City of London or at The Championships.

IBM Slamtracker, a powerful tool for fans, is now integrated with AI to provide detailed previews and recaps of matches. This feature analyses the past eight years of results and statistics to anticipate a player’s performance against his or her opponent. It also summarizes key data insights and highlights in bullet points, helping us better understand player performance and match dynamics. Adding generative AI ensures we receive accurate and timely information continuously, ensuring we never miss critical game moments.

Using IBM's WatsonX platform, Wimbledon introduces personalized player stories and match analyses. This feature uses large language models to generate content tailored to our preferences and location. Remember that pre-match analysis offers insights into player form and chances of winning, while post-match summaries inform us about critical highlights and turning points.

Wimbledon’s digital experience includes redesigned apps and platforms to improve accessibility. The Wimbledon 2024 App and wimbledon.com have been optimized to deliver faster load times and a more user-friendly interface.

The Catch Me Up feature offers personalized content based on our favorite players and match preferences. This tool combines match data with AI technology to deliver custom player cards, updating our digital experiences with relevant statistics and stories. This ensures that we can receive a tailored and immersive experience throughout The Championships at home or on the go.

As noted above, IBM’s collaboration with Wimbledon aims to improve our fan engagement and optimize match analysis. WatsonX and hybrid cloud solutions gather and process large volumes of data, including player statistics, social sentiment, and match videos, to deliver real-time insights and predictive outcomes. Fans can access personalized highlights, providing a deeper understanding of each player’s game activity, performance and match dynamics. These include tailored content such as individual player highlights, intricate play analyses and match summaries. This technology has been refined and bespoke to enhance our viewing experience and offers valuable insights into game strategies and player development.

IBM Granite, a family of open-source large language models, exemplifies a data-driven approach to enhancing the provision of player information by synthesizing vast datasets, including historical performance statistics, current season data, and even social media sentiment. The model can generate comprehensive player profiles, predictive analyses, and nuanced narratives that capture a player’s form, style, and potential strategies by processing this multifaceted data. This provides commentators and analysts with deeper insights to share with the audience and offers fans a richer, more informed perspective on their favorite players.

WatsonX identifies patterns and trends in the data and translates those into an engaging storytelling experience. The nuances of a player’s journey and capabilities are brought to the forefront, creating a more connected and personalized fan experience.

The global Morning Consult survey, which provides valuable insights into how global tennis fans perceive the impact of AI on their experience, is a valuable resource to understand how these shifts in viewership trends are shaping the future of the sport.

According to the study, 60 percent of tennis fans believe technology will positively influence the sport and enhance fan engagement. More specifically, 75 percent of respondents think technology will advance training, 74 percent believe it will improve game strategy, 71 percent see benefits for coaching, and 66 percent recognize its potential in talent identification and acquisitions. This optimistic outlook is primarily driven by AI’s ability to offer real-time updates, create personalized content, and provide unique insights for fans, players and their coaches.

Fans can anticipate utilizing match data to generate engaging narratives that resonate with their interests, making the viewing experience more immersive. AI technologies also enhance fan engagement by tailoring content to individual preferences, ensuring fans receive updates and personalized stories about their favorite players. These features significantly improve the viewing experience, whether fans watch actively or passively, and keep them connected to the matches in real time.

Moreover, the system’s ability to quickly process new data and generate fresh content allows for near real-time updates on player performance and progress throughout the tournament. By leveraging AI, Wimbledon can provide detailed information and stories for many players that would be possible with human writers, thereby enhancing the overall fan experience.

The global Morning Consult survey also highlights vital global trends in tennis viewership. Many fans prioritize real-time updates, followed by personalized content and unique insights. These preferences indicate a shift towards a more interactive and customized viewing experience. The data suggest that as these AI-driven features become more widespread, tennis viewership could grow, attracting newer, tech-savvy audiences. For instance, IBM’s newest features for Wimbledon 2024 leverage generative AI to keep fans updated with dynamic, personalized content reflecting these evolving trends. By staying attuned to these changing preferences, organizations can better cater to their audience, ensuring a more engaging and satisfying experience during major tennis events.

Like last year, when I first reported on IBM generative AI advancements, Wimbledon 2024 leverages generative AI to offer real-time match highlights and player statistics. As noted above, there are different experiences in viewing pre-match analysis and post-match summaries. These insights are far more personalized and tailored to everyone’s needs, making it easier to stay updated on every match on any device. IBM WatsonX, with its large language models, customizes AI-generated summaries and analysis, allowing fans to get a comprehensive match breakdown. I certainly enjoyed utilizing these features with my guests while watching the match on Court One on 11 July. Combining AI and expert analysis helped me understand my preferred player’s trajectory throughout The Championships.

In a world that needs to humanize AI, the features are designed to offer insights that blend machine precision with human expertise, showing how players’ strategies unfold on the court.

The Catch Me Up, IBM Slamtracker, and Likelihood to Win features are undoubtedly helpful in drawing live experiences. They combine AI to inform us about each player’s past performance, execution prowess and upcoming challenges. These features tell us who will win based on historical data and current form. I hope you will use those as we get to the final tomorrow. The latest WatsonX capabilities analyze serve speed, rally length, and player endurance to predict match outcomes. This data-driven approach accurately represents players’ strengths and weaknesses.

The integration of AI capabilities makes following The Championships more engaging and allows for more informed predictions and a better appreciation of the sport. Like me, I hope you enjoyed using these tools to closely follow your favorite players during Wimbledon and gain insights previously accessible only to professional analysts. The innovations at Wimbledon 2024 are set to transform how we experience tennis to a very tailored and personalized level.
